10 Lessons in Guerilla Tactics of Project Management This "satirical approach to (software) project management" shows the "possibilities a project manager has to create the appearance of managing a project well without the burden of actually doing it. (...) It is intended for project managers as well as people who monitor or supervise project managers, because we can prevent dirty tricks better if we have studied them." Project Engine (project tool) Project Engine is a very useful and recommendable project management tool. It is very easy to learn and to use and is free of charge. This small programm takes only 1.7 MB, thus can be downloaded rapidly (about 5 min with a 53 kbps dial-up modem). The Swedish developpers describe it as follows: "In all projects, tasks of various size and importance are distributed between project members. Project Engine supports tasks of any size and at any level in the project. Tasks are broken down into subtasks that can be scheduled for completion in a predefined order or at a specified date. Project Engine will handle the scheduling and distribution of tasks while the individual project member can concentrate on completing his or her task list." An interesting server version for use through the internet is available, which is useful if team members work in different countries or far away regions. Cost: for up to five users: US$ 275, 6-15 users: US$ 795, etc.

Project management software: Basecamp Project management software often is either too complicated or too expensive, or both. Basecamp is simple and reasonably priced. For each project, you have messages, to-dos, milestones, writeboards, chats and files and decide who has access to which projects. The monthly user-fee for this web-based service depends on the number of projects you are managing, and not on the number of users: Managing one project is free of charge, and as many people can work on this project and use Basecamp as you wish. For up to 3 projects, the monthly fee is USD 12; for 15 projects USD 24; for 35 projects USD 49, etc. We started to use Basecamp at NGO Manager and the NGO Management School and can recommend it.
